We would like to remind you that the San Carlos Airport runway and taxiways will be CLOSED to all traffic starting at 6:00 am THIS MONDAY, September 11th, for 30 days! This is a continuous closure (day and night). No arrivals or departures will be allowed at any time during the closure.

If you have aircraft parked in hangars, T-shades, or on the ramp, and you need to fly during the closure, you will need to relocate your aircraft BEFORE MONDAY. Ramp parking is available at Reid-Hillview, but please note that 100LL is not available there. Ramp space is sold-out at Palo Alto, and Half Moon Bay is nearing capacity, so if you haven’t already made arrangements at those locations, Reid-Hillview is probably your best option.

The runway and taxiways are scheduled to reopen on October 11th — PLEASE CHECK NOTAMS before planning flights into and out of San Carlos Airport near that date.

If you choose to leave your aircraft in its parking spot in San Carlos, you will still have access to it and to the ramp. The KSQL tower will remain open, and the Class D airspace will remain in effect during normal tower hours — so be sure to call the tower before entering the airspace!

We appreciate that it is painful to have the airport closed for such a long period of time. Airport management has assured us that the timeline is as aggressive as practical, but also achievable. The contractor has incentives to stay on schedule, and the contractor is experienced with this type of project (stabilizing Bay mud for runways), so fingers crossed!

Lengthy closures for runway refurbishment are not uncommon. As an example, Jackson Hole, Wyoming’s airport was completely closed for 78 days for runway reconstruction in 2022. San Francisco International shut down Runway 28L for 20 days in 2019, which required airlines to significantly reduce flights during that period. Van Nuys Airport shut down its runway 16L for more than five months last year for reconstruction. And Lake Havasu, Arizona’s airport had its only runway (and thus, the airport) closed for 42 days earlier this year for rehabilitation.

We look forward to getting many years of service from the new runway. We will keep you advised of changes to the schedule as soon as we are aware of them.
